Fernando Ferreira is the Director of the Geopolitical Risk Service at Rapidan Energy Group, based in Washington, DC. He oversees all geopolitical coverage, monitoring and forecasting risks to global oil and gas flows. He manages Rapidan’s proprietary information network, supporting the firm’s analysis of market-moving risks.

Fernando is a geopolitical expert who communicates complex political and geopolitical dynamics to a high-level audience, including C-suite executives and government officials. He closely monitors changes to U.S. sanctions to evaluate their impact on oil and gas stakeholders. Additionally, Fernando maintains regular contact with government officials, providing insights that support policymaking. His global network of contacts is a critical resource in helping clients navigate evolving situations.

His work at Rapidan Energy Group included crucial support for Founder Robert McNally in researching and writing the 2017 book Crude Volatility: The History and Future of Boom-Bust Oil Prices (Columbia University Press). For this project, Fernando developed a historical series of monthly oil prices dating back to 1859 and analyzed oil market disruptions and spare capacity from World War II onwards.

Prior to his current role, Fernando worked as a research intern with the Energy and National Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, focusing on oil markets and geopolitics.

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Fernando earned his B.S. in Economics and his Masters in International Commerce & Policy from George Mason University.
